My name is Olivia Lim. My ancestor came from Jincheng Town. I am a fifth generation Kinmenese in Singapore. This trip back to my great grandparents’ home town was very touching.
This time when I visited Kinmen, I went with my sister and my two cousins, it is also my second time in Kinmen. What interested me the most was the ZaiShan tunnel and the ShuiTou village that we visited. The tunnel was very interesting, although I had been there before, it was still entertaining to walk through the tunnel, as I learned more things about it this time. This time, I saw many holes in the wall as well as a huge one with a flock of birds living inside. I enjoyed the ShuiTou village as it was very big and cool to see things from the past. I also saw a cat near a store and it was very cute. The entire trip was fun to travel with many others like us, and explored Kinmen old town with my sister and cousins.
The hotel was vintage and cosy, there was a vintage looking make-up desk that my sister used. The food at the buffet was very tasty, there were many options, and we had sufficient time to get ready to have breakfast in the morning. The most memorial lunch was the hotpot, it was self-served and everyone had their own hotpot. I loved the food they served.
I also enjoyed the HouPuTou museum, where it is a big mansion to understand how people lived.
The villages we visited were windy and cooling, I enjoyed the villages and towns with the kind and polite people.
I visited a place where my great great grandfather had placed a wrote a stone tablet on top of a mountain that we hiked up with my cousins. We chatted along the way up and it was very fun. In the afternoon, we also visited my great great grandfather ‘s house in the ton, it was a special experience for me, and I began to think how they lived in those conditions 100 years ago.
I felt that this trip brought me closer to my cousins, as well as my ancestors, I appreciate the Kinmen government to invite us to tour Kinmen with open hands and treating us well during our trip. I feel that Kinmen is a very interesting and cool place with many more places to explore. I think I would like to come to Kinmen again in future, to explore and visit more places that my ancestors had been to, and to understand more about how they live in those hardship days, that make me appreciated more on my life today in Singapore.
