I am He Hui Ni, originally from Pu Bian(浦边), and I am a third-generation descendant in Singapore. My grandfather came to Nanyang when he was around 12 years old. This time, me and my two sisters participated in the Youth Kinmen Homecoming and Roots-Seeking Tour together.
This journey has given me a deeper understanding of the hardships my grandfather faced when he went to Nanyang. Although history lessons in Singapore and visits to museums have introduced some experiences of going to Nanyang, this time in Kinmen, hearing the tour guide share about different buildings and the stories of how within 10 who went to Nanyang, 6 died, only 1 returned to Kinmen, and 3 stayed in Nanyang, made me admire our ancestors’ spirit of hard work and their gratitude for their homeland.
Another experience was seeing how enthusiastic the county government was in helping us find and contact our relatives, which was filled with a strong sense of familial warmth. Their sincere desire to help those who didn’t know if they had relatives here was truly impressive, especially in this relatively small island of Kinmen.
